Search Engine Marketing

Once you have learned the ins and outs of search engine optimization, you may wonder what the next step in the process is. You may already know how to reorganize a website, include appropriate keywords, and update meta-tags, but that is only one half of the equation. Once you have the basics down, now you have to put them into practice.

Step One: Research Keywords

The key to great search engine optimization is knowing what sort of keywords you would like to be searched under. You should try to make them both vague enough to be searched for frequently, and specific enough that you won’t have too much competition. Say you’re a law firm based in Peoria. While you might want to be found under “law firm,” so does everybody else. Maybe you’ll want to be searched for under “Peoria law firm” just to keep your competition pool low. Remember that the number one entry under the hundredth most common topic gets a lot more traffic than the hundredth entry under the most common.

Step Two: Get Links

As you know, one of the best ways to raise your Google rank fast is by getting other companies to link to you. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. You could write articles for websites about the keywords you are hoping to be ranked under. These articles would then link to your webpage, which is great. Next you could try contacting blogs and websites related to your keywords. Offer to write a guest post, or have them include information about you. Remember to ask to include the keywords in the anchor text, which is a great way to increase your ranking.

Step Three: Revise your Website

You should already know the basics if you’re reading this, but make sure that you actually do it. If you need to brush up, you can Google any number of great websites about what to do for best social media practices.

Step Four: Update

An old webpage with new content is exactly what the Google spiders are looking for, so you should do your best in order to make sure that your webpage is up to date with new information. Don’t just make a few changes here or there; try your best to regularly update your webpage with major overhauls.
